Hi guys,

I need help.

I have a dimmer switch downstairs with 2 switches, one controls the kitchen light and one controls the dining room light. This single switch is the only way to turn the lights on in these two rooms - they are not wired up to any other switches and we can turn each room on independent of the other. My wife switched one of them on t'other day and the switch itself went bang and tripped the circuit breaker.

I got a new switch and fitted it exactly the same way but the circuit breaker will not go back on!!

I thought I'd try fitting a normal switch to make sure I hadn't purchased a duff dimmer switch but I'm a bit baffled how to fit it.

Please see my attached diagram.

Can anyone advise??

Thanks,

Paul.

Thanks but no luck

Does that mean the circuit breaker has blown and needs replacing?

I've tried 2 different switches now, a dimmer and a normal one but the circuit breaker will not go back up.

Try switching the main RCD off, then reset the mcb for the lights, then switch the rcd back on again...If that doesn't work then there is another problem somewhere...

Tried switching the main switch off on the fuse board....all elec went off as expected but the downstairs circuit breaker still wouldn't go up. Switched power back on and still wouldn't go up.

Does that give any more clues?

Ta!

Remove all the bulbs from the light unit that was being switched when you had the bang..you may find an edison screw lamp with a dead short, then try the above again..

Having re-thought, sounds like the Mcb if fecked..unusual though not unheard of..

Try again with main switch off and be fairly bold with the lighting circuit Mcb..

Looks like the circuit breaker is goosed! Bro-in-law just had a look and wired the downstairs into the upstairs light circuit temporarily...

Well diagnosed Wine-O!! Thanks..
