Hi all,

new to the forum. I have bought a standard 1-way dimmer light switch and was wondering if I can use this with my mains connected floor-standing lamp. Basically, the lamp has the standard LIVE and NEUTRAL wiring.

Question:

Can I cut the wire that comes from the lamp into the mains wall socket and fix the dimmer switch into it?? I would have a LIVE and NEUTRAL comming into the dimmer swtich from the mains and a LIVE and NEUTRAL comming out of it into the lamp. Is that possible?? The lamp is 100w and the dimmer says it is capable of up to 250w. However, I have a feeling that it is only for the proper home lighting circut (i.e. for the lights in the ceilling!)

thanks
Abe

Hi and welcome,

I'm sure that you could do it, but you would need an enclosure for it and it would look a mess to be honest.

If you were to use it you would leave the neutral wire and just cut the live and place the live wire in com and the live wire to the lamp in L1 or 1way.

I think you would be much better off with a dimmer made for the purpose, like one of these-

Obviously make sure that you unplug it from the mains before attempting to fit a dimmer

thanks!... so are you saying that I do not need the blue neutral wire at all???

just connect the live from the mains into L1 and the live wire going into the light to the other ... thats it? how does the circut complete if neutral is not used?

am confused...

No, you need the neutral.

Just don't cut the neutral wire in half, like you will have to with the live.
