Hi Guys n Gals

I`m new to this Forum and in need of advice. Well probabley alot of advice but at the moment I could do with some advice on, PAINT !!!

Theres so much of the stuff but which is good and which is not?
What have you all settled on using and why also what paints did you not like and what are your reasons for that?

Your comments would be of great help and would also help save a new business one heck of alot of wasted time and money,

Forums! a great invention almost if not greater than the wheel.
I mean` could you imagine having to try all those different pots of paint to find which was the best!

(a bit like they did before forums i suppose) Laughing

TIA Russ

I like Dulux Trade Supermatt. I also like the PVA binder that it contains.

dulux trade for me as well.

I thought the layland/johnstones mdf primer, viynl matt and wood undercoat was pretty good when i used it.

F&B . its OK ish

Fired earth I really dont like

Crown trade, as a direct comparison to dulux trade, it wasnt as good at covering.

For me, it boils down to coverage......do job in 2 coats instead of 3. Most of the finishes are as you expect with all brands ie matt, silk, flat matt etc.

Go for dulux trade, if your not trade, go to a bnq warehouse, as they have a pretty good range now, as an OK price (about 5-15% overpriced)

I agree with feva, peter and HM, I am a Dulux gal, I am also partial to 'Gliddens', made by ICI as well.
I prefere oilbase UC, gloss etc to waterbased.
I also prefer tetrion pwder filler, and have started using 'Wicks' own make decorating caulk, at £1.20 a tube its great value.
I do sometimes by in bulk from other companies, but its handy if you run out, and you are near a 'Wickes'

Not too keen on F/B paint, Crown, I can put up with, fired Earth last time I used it, I would say is on parr with F/B.
Dont use Laura Trashly products if you can help it, they are rubbish.

Dont use 'wickes' own emulsion, its awful, B&Q emulsion is not bad if your desperate.

If I think of anything else I will get back to you. Smile

Waiting for Sainsburys to open to do my shopping. (Womans work is never done) Rolling Eyes

I use Leyland/Johnstones for most of my paints, good coverage/prices. and they'll colour match emulsion, undercoat, gloss and eggshell. I've got an account with them so I get discount and they'll deliver for free (handy in this part of the world).

Using a bit more Dulux Trade recently (trying to cross match clients choice of colours from the Dulux range to the Leyland range can be a pain!) which is more expensive but seems to be very highly thought of on the Forums - however, make sure its the Trade stuff, Dulux centres will mix up any colours you want. Don't go for the ready-mixed retail stuff, apart from the initial cost you'll need two coats to every one coat of a trade paint - be it Dulux/Glidden/Leyland

Caulking I use Mangers, but recently had some Jewsons which I found really good.

As for fillers I always keep a bag of Gyproc Easifil handy (£12 for 10Kg)as I do a fair bit of tape & skim but its also brilliant for filling shallow holes - doesn't skrink, sands ultra smooth and dries extyremely quickly.

Basically, stick to Trade paints - keeps the quality up & costs down. If FADS/local store/supermarket have an offer too good to be true it generally isn't.

Thats about it for my Sunday morning ramble - enjoy!

All paint companaies have good and bad products, all decorators have perticular favourites//often based on their personal techniques.

Most trade paints these days are pretty good but I tend to jump from one brand to another depending on the task...for instance I wont buy Dulux white weathershield as IMO I think the covering power is crap..I normally buy Johntones or Crown,,,however I never buy crown gloss because I find it greyish compared to duluxs...I buy dulux undercoat for new work...because its thick...and crown for re decorating work because its thnner and has better flow qualities.

I cant pick a favourite...but I can pick a least favourite...Leyland.

I'm with most on here, esp have brush about leyland, poor finishing quality's, fine for cheap work, try to avoid this, as you will know, a bad job is very to hard to shake off the reputaion gained.

I tend to use Dulux the most, with specialist primers from Zinsser.

Telmay your aviator is hilarious. Laughing

Well what can I say folks, Fantastic response and all very useful to me. I know too well that the coverage is the main issue closley followed by the price. As i mentioned I have just set up on my own so I`m having learning curves round every corner.

I have to be competative so the customers will be happy with my quotes. But also I dont like the idea of losing money. Its a fine line isnt it? One i will get the hang of soon enough. I`ve got a reasonably sized job on this week and i`m picking up my supplies in the morning. I will be going to the dulux centre for sure based on what i`ve read from you folks and other things that i`ve seen around the net.

Too much research and not enough painting Bang Head

Ya Awlll very kind thank you for your help..... Thumbright

go to bnq warehouse and write down some of their prices for DT stuff. Then you can go in to the DT centre and make sure they dont overcharge.

I find its good having a bnq trade card, 5% off everything, 60 days to pay, free delivery on anything over £50............and more importantly, its open on sunday and till 9pm mid week.

It can be very handy.
