Hi, is it common for a mixer shower to be supplied directly from the mains water supply? or is this the reason it now leaks from the front

Yes it is common for the cold to be connected directly to the shower.

What make and model is the shower?

I once had a mira 415 that leaked from the front, it needed a new cartridge and was about £50
