Is it OK to attach lighting to the downstairs main ring for low volate kitchen lights? Or must the lighting be connected to the downstairs lighting circuit?

I also noticed that the downstairs & upstairs rings aren't protected by an RCD on the 'RCD side' of my consumer unit. Why would this be? Doesn't it make sense to protect everything in the consumer unit with RCD's?

Many Thanks,
JG.

Hi Mr Garner,

You need to connect it to the lighting circuit, if someone comes along after you and switches off the lighting circuit, they will literally get a shock thinking they have isolated the lighting to find that your spots are on the ring main.
