We all like jam? in our house we like it, but don't eat it that often (I am diabetic so I eat it even less) so we buy a jar of jam, and next time we go to have some, its growing its own fur coat :puke:

Sitting in a hotel, it occurred to me hotels don't throw away jam as it comes in either very small jars or "blister packs" so we have been buying jam in blister packs which means you only open just the one and the rest still stay sealed and not growing a furry jacket. Works for us, and saves money as we don't keep throwing out jars of jam.

We get ours from any seller on Ebay

Your local wholesalers will have them by the boxful at far less cost.

But you do know there's nothing wrong with the 'fur'...?? Scrape it off and use the 'fresh' jam under it.

Better still, use honey instead. Better for you and it NEVER goes off.

Not really - too sweet for my taste, on toast, give me Pate, Marmite, Cheese or Peanut Butter. I can't even tolerate ready made Pasta or Curry sauces, they're all too sweet.

I love Marmite, sadly it does not like me these days as it upsets my stomach. I used to love thick granary bread toasted with Marmite for breakfast. Now, in my type 2 diabetes monitoring mode, I have porridge with a few grapes and once a week I will have toast as a meal but have brown sauce instead of Marmite :cb

As I do not have too much that is sweet, jam is out for me, even the diabetic ones are too sweet.

Yes, we have kept lam (once opened) in the fridge, still gets a fur coat.

Wholesalers.............for us, waste of time and money.

Any wholesaler will not let in joe public (me) unless you have an account. We neither have nor want an account for something of little use.
years ago we tried Costco, yes, got a membership, yes you can buy stuff cheaper.............if you have a large family and want to buy stuff you neither want nor need. You can't buy anything "normal" in singles (Understandable as its a wholesalers who sell to shops) but we don't need 25 tubes of toothpaste, a huge box of "blister jam" it goes on, then there is storage of stuff you buy, we don't have the room. I worked it out we would have to spend a lot more than we really needed to just to cover the cost of member ship. We never renewed it.

Can't stand jam kept in the fridge who wants a chilled jam butty!
Cheaper supermarket jams do go off quicker than premium brands I find. When the Mrs makes it, doesn't stay around long enough to go off normally! :huray:

Yes, there is always that, and yes, supermarket jams are often "slightly thick syrup" not Jam like Robertsons.

What about storing the jar upside down ? apparently that is supposed to stop it going mouldy
What about placing a waxed disc (grease proof paper) on top

I'm a bit of a marmaduke, I buy tins of concentrate don't add water but juice of 3 lemons and a little less sugar, plus boil & simmer longer than stated for a yummy orange marmalade. Never had fur problems, even in the tropics but then it does not last longer than 2 months to qualify as a test.

I think that the fur is caused by contamination, normally the buttery knife going in the pot during spreading. I always did it as I could not be arsed to get a spoon. As jam is a preserve it should stay good left unsullied.

Yes, it's definitely contamination. Use a clean spoon (preferably dipped in a cup of boiled water beforehand - use the spoon you stirred your tea with) and NEVER stick your knife in it or reuse any implement in it.
