That's 1/2" steel.

Does it just feed the toilet or are there any other pipes taking water from it?

If you put a pair of stil lies on the pipe and a pair on the tap to hold it still you would push down on the ones on the pipe but it would go much easier with a but of heat.

You also need to be aware that if there are any elbows you won't be able to turn the pipe cos it will hit the wall in which case you would need to cut the pipe before you undo it.

If you're in a flat with others under earth I'd consider getting someone in to do the disconnection

Loads more work for those of us that can actually thread pipe, about 1 in 20 guys from what I can see

I can't wait til external gas runs are all in steel

Could be sooner than you think at the rate of copper being used up. I'm sure I've still got a threading kit in the garage somewhere! :thumbleft:

I told you what it is on two forums but just in case you missed it.

1/2" galvanised barrel.

it doesn't look too bad so if you cut the pipe, leave at lest 6" into the stopcock.

Add a bit of heat if you can, then use a pair of stilsons on the pipe, and another pair or large spanner on the stopcock so it doesn't move.

I got the impression fellow members weren't absolutely sure what metal my pipework was until I posted a picture. I received posts giving various possibilies.

However, I'm grateful now I've been told its steel.

The pipe in the picture continues along to the right, then there's an elbow which rises up to the cistern. I think will cut the pipe a few inches to the right of the stopcock and then, as a practice run, have a go at seeing how easily I can uscrew the pipe at one of the elbows, on the right.

Thanks again.

To Razor - the toilet is upstairs in my house. Also, the pipe continues along the right, then there's an elbow, then the pipe rises to the cistern.

I'll cut the pipe a few inches to the right of the stopcock, then, as a practice run, I'll see how easily the pipe will unscrew from the elbow on the right. That will determine what I then do with the cut pipe from the stopcock.

I can now add that I have been successful in removing the piece of pipe I was asking about. Now I can easily continue on with copper to the toilet.

Many thanks to all you who showed some interest in my questions!
