Been reading a lot of stuff online just now about the evils of t-cut.

The garage where I get the van serviced/MOT'd says there's no real problem in using it once a year to keep the paint fresh, and that it won't do any real damage.

Wondering what your good selves thought on this.

everytime you use it it removes a small layer of paint so so you would need to apply something like Autoglym Super resin polish, then a good wax over that,it really depends on how picky you are on the end result
here is a good debate on the product, you might have to register to view it

I don't know any detailers who would use T-Cut original...far too aggressive for regular use, it always remind me of Brasso!

There are better products around such as the Autoglym mentioned above...which is what I use

I have always used Autoglym super resin polish. My red car was slightly dull when I bought it, but I washed it most weeks and polished it each time afterwards and after a few months it looked great. Infact, people are always asking if I have had it resprayed!
A really good product to use instead if T-Cut is Farrecla. This comes in many different grades. It is used by alot of bodyshops and depending on what grade you use, it starts off slightly gritty, a little like the texture of humus, but these particles dissolve and get finner and finner leaving a great finish. I'd recommend using it once to cut the top layer of dull paint back, then to polish it monthly with normal polish such as Autoglym.

I find t-cut is good for scuffs and marks, if someone bumps into your bumper ect leaving a mark. It removes the mark from the paintwork well.

I used to do a bit of smart repair and quite frankly t-cut is rubbish! (not compared how it used to be back in the day!) New paintwork is very thin! waterbased paint doesn't have the depth of the old solvent based paint meaning you have to be very careful as you can very easily go through the top lacquer and base coat! I would personaly use farecla g3 or total and a machine buffer the results can then be simply waxed over and I find the shine lasts for a long long time (probably not best practice for everyone you can burn the paint if you don't know what you are doing!)

But that's just me!!

Meguiars ultra cut here, very occasionally, t cut is far far far too abrasive.
Swissvax stuff for the rest of it.

Most motorists royally erm... sausage up! their paintwork anyway though, one bucket, pound shop sponge and some cheap shampoo, getting all that grit back on there creating swirl marks. Shudder.

How times have changed, back in the day when i was driving old cortina's.Hillmans etc one never heard of swirls  the sponge and bucket method and a tin of Turtle Wax was all that was needed, however i suppose back then the paint finishes were layered on not like the water based eco paints today
I do remember a funny story i heard,my gran like all women back then used donkey stones for the steps
one young 10 year old after watching his mother labour away on her steps decided to impress his stern father by cleaning his brand new Morris traveller whilst he was at work and yes you guessed it he did it with a donkey stone

I've heard stories of a middle aged woman doing it with a brillo pad and some washing up liquid.
Never let a woman wash your car...

I also remember reading a story a while back about a woman outside of a waitrose decided to fill up her husbands mercs coolant, not knowing which hole to put it in she poured sparkling water into every hole she could find. ::b
