is it just me or do it seem that emulsion isnt as good as it used to be?
ive done two jobs recently where the customer wanted the rooms painting white from magonlia, asked each it if they wanted me to supply the paint one said no and got dulux retail, brilliant white silk emulsion, the other went to B&Q and phoned when in there and asked if i would recommend dulux, cos it was £28 for 10L, i said that i could get 20L of glidden silk for £39.48, she ok it.
being doing the front foom and HSL, both like i said magonlia, four coats its took to cover it, ive always like glidden but this is the first time ive used glidden silk. the same with the dulux retail that took four coats.
is there any thing i could be doing to stop the need of four coats, i know theres better dulux paints out there that would do that, but theres quite a few customer that will supply there own paint.

I don't paint much but I always try and get Dulux.

If I was supplied the paint I would refuse to do the job or at least explain to the customer that they may have saved a few pounds on materials, but will end up paying more in Labour as it will require more coats.

this is the first time in my 9-10 years of being a decorator that ive come across this, i always try to use dulux but some of the people i do work for are on a budget so they tend not to go for the top make, i cant rate dulux trade highly enough, i just thought it was funny that ive come across this problem for the first time this year and to come across it twice, just wondered if any one else had this problem, seems to be a trend for me at the moment that im painting rooms white, and its iether all white or with a coulour stripe along or down the main wall, ive done pink, blue and green and orange, no wondered i can lie so well 'oh yeah it looks really nice, il have to tell the missus about it, it'll look good in oir house' Laughing

Isn't there a grey undercoat for white?

I'm sure I remember bringing a terracotta back to white over a grey undercoat, from memory it was 1 coat of grey 2 coats of white.

i've heard of that slight grey undercoat for white before...........dont understand how it works.

Anyway, dulux trade all the way for emulsions (although i've only ever used matt, why would anyone want silk, its the work of the devil).

As UHM says the labour for one more coat cost more than the extra cost of the paint. Done quite a few ceilings in white that have been skimmed, and itss covered in 2 coats (one mist/one final coat)

Will paint age in the tin and loose its opacity? and you ended up with old stock without realising?

PS I like Silk Embarassed - I find flat matt a bit 'lifeless' (and white walls are also a bit boring, aren't they? is that the popular choice at the moment?)

in 5 years of doing this, i have never put silk up. Most want matt, and about 20% want a heritage/flat matt.

If you find matt 'lifeless', you'll probably be sick when you see flat matt Laughing

as for old emulsions, i have used emulsion thats been open for 1 year, and its fine. I woulld say as long as its sealed and doesnt freeze, it should be fine for 2 years ish.

I don't like painting and the last place we got an P&D relative (now a very, very ex-relative) to paint and he tried to convince us to stay matt - walls were quite old and bumpy as well - but we stuck to silk
This house - painted rooms myself and went with silk again Thumbright - then again, if people want white, they sure wouln't want our colour choices either Laughing
I do like some of the heritage paints though.

re paint quality - bought B&Q white emulsion once - lovely and thick it was - just like milk Shocked

Feva, just a little advise from an 'old timer' Shocked (20+ years at it!) angry White is a complete pain in the bottom more so if there is any sheen, let alone silk! Bang Head Bang Head

Next time you get this type of request, use a High Opacity Matt as the base coat, or even coats, depending on what colour you are covering scratch , the stronger or darker the more you will need, Crying raely will you need three, but average on two. Thumbright
You should then have a very solid colour to work from, Thumbright use the 'silk' as the final coat, this way you will have a very superior finish, with no chance of any area/s showing as slightly different, or darker. Thumbright Thumbright

Stick to Trade outlets, Glidden is fine paint, but as an average, work on two coats compaired to Dulux Trade, hence the differnece in prices, angry another 'cheat' Thumbright that you can use, is to mix in some Flowetrol in to your paint, this stuf will make quite a difference to the coverage and obliteration of the colour, very good for Red's, Greens and esp Yellows, which are by nature, transparent. Crying

Seen this posted on the 'other' site, did not bother there, you will understand why! Bang Head Bang Head Bang Head Bang Head

Hope that this will be of use to you in future? Thumbright

welshie thanks for the advice, i posted on the other site with out thinking once id posted it, i thought why have i just done that? Bang Head
then jcts replyed and he's gave some good advice in the past so i did want to blank him.
i was thinking that a matt base coat would help, the first time i had the problem was with retail dulux and just put it down to that, i didnt think that glidden would be that bad.
ive tried and tried to talk the customers out of silk but they wouldnt have it at all, i thinks it looks pants, just ruins the finish!
thanks again people
