Hi everyone

I need some advice re UC installain in my attic. I'm currently in the process of finalising plans for converting my attic. I was speaking with an engineer re steel sizes etc. So he said that I would require 203 203 46kg steel and would requrie 5.5m of steel on both sides of the attic to 1. support the truss and 2. for the new floor joists. The steel will have to be installed in 3 pieces as there is no way to get a complete piece through the gable. I calculated that each piece of steel would weigh 84kg, which is pretty heavy to say the least. The 3 pieces would then be bolted together with plates etc

My question is: Is there a technique to installing the steels without damaging the existing ceiling joist and for lifting them into place?

Your advice would be grateful.

Thanks

Andy

Lifting them into place is easy enough, especially as you are going to have them in 3 bits.
2 people should be able to handle them without much of a problem.

As for the existing ceiling, job to say, is the bottom flange going to be above the ceiling joists?

Hi hitch

Yes the bottom flange will be above the ceiling joists.

Hitch can I also ask you in regards to the top flange. Is there another way other than using a hilti gun to fix the timber to the top flange (this will carry the supporting stud wall) For example could holes be pre drilled in the factory so that I could bolt the plate onto the flange?

Normally would drill 12mm holes at 600mm centres along the length, alternate sides of the web, to bolt down through.
Probably easier, if you or your builder doesn't want to shot fire the plate onto it.
Just drill the timber and use M10 coach bolts.

If you want that, make a note on the drawing before it goes for fabrication.

Great Hitch

Alternating the positon of the holes on the web was exactly what I was thinking. Would this method be a common request in your experience?

Yeah, very common. 600ctrs, alternating either side of the web, so you get 1200 ctrs along each side. :thumbright:
