Hi there

My washing machine has packed up, so I'm in the process of replacing it. I've been at this property for 4 years and its been here since.

I was taking a closer look at the water connections of the machine to the main water pipes and noticed the taps were rusty/lime-scaled. It looks like I wont be able to turn the water off at this point. I decided to look at the main water connection tap, and it too has a similar problem.

1) is there a way to fix those taps?
2) if i cant fix the, taps can i somehow install the washing machine safely?

I've attached pictures of the both areas. Really appreciate your help/views..

Thanks

Those are seriously scaled up gate Valves!!!

You'll need to turn off at the main stopcock, drain down the tank in the loft, replace those with full bore isolators...

Where in the UK is the water that hard???

damn ! I was thinking about replacing the boiler as its very very old, but I wasnt planning on doing it this year. It might be a case of replacing the boiler and replacing the values.

The water is really hard here, here being South East London! I live in an ex-council property so boiler/tank system is old.
I guess when I get the new boiler installed, I was told I could use rods to make the water softer?

Thanks for your reply !

Just a point that might help is that new washing machines only have a cold feed.

Ah that is a good point. I live in a block of flats - how could I isolate the water supply that only affects the cold feed?

Thanks for your reply
