Ok guys,

after balancing the system (ish) myself and a plumber the conclusions are as follows:

1. the biggest radiator (size of a door!) does not heat up as quick as others. we come to the conclusion that:

a) The rad is to oversized (BTU) for the system/lounge with 7 other rads (in the lounge is this big thing and another rad)

b) it may be the last one in the chain so it will take awhile to heat up (currently top and bottom are samish temp after 1hr)

c) not balanced properly (but i did this the way described here : (open rad one at a time with lockshield btw i started with this big rad first)

i guess i am depressed that it takes the biggest one so long (well 1hr ish for it to be PIPING HOT HOT from top and bottom) is there anything else i can do? or prove the above things the plumber told me?

if it's undersized pipes it will be sluggish, the only thing you could do is re-pipe it

Could be difficult to repipe the whole length, but if you can get at some of the pipe length, then re-piping that part would help.

Alternatively, if it's under a window and that's single glazed, you might find double glazing a fix.

scruff it has the standard pipes with it (same size as other rads). so what we are saying is that lift floor boards and re-do pipes? thats a lot as we had new wooden flooring and the boiler is in the next room (kitchen).

i guess there is nothing else i can do??? Crying

some of the pipe (coming from the floor can be got to as u can see it under the wooden flooring) but fitting a bigger pipe say 10cm long will it make a difference?

What do you call standard pipe.

I would say a rad that size should have a dedicated 15mm into 22mm.

Is that the only rad or are there several other on the same leg.

How does it react to the other rads being turn off.

You opened the lockshield on this rad first, how much? If it was just half a turn or so the flow would have dropped when you opened the other rads. Open it a couple of turns and try turning off other rads a couple at a time quite often its one rad that short circuits the system.

The lockshields on most of the rads should be open less than one full turn.

scruff:

when others are switched off it heats up quicker.

razor:
the plumber did it 1/4 turn at a time so opened each one 1/4 at a time.

should i try this:

leave the big rad 1/4 turn on lockshield
turn one rad at a time
wait 10 mins see if it heats up quicker
continue but when/how will i see which one is at fault?

Open the big one fully and adjust the other up or down to balance
