I spent a couple of fretful hours this afternoon sorting out my PC.

The monitor appeared to die earlier today - I phoned my son and checked with him (cos he knows about these things) and he agreed that a faulty monitor was the most likely culprit.

The trip to PC World was bad enough, (actually the trip was alright but PCWorld are a bit of a nightmare - hardly any stock or choice).

So back home with the new monitor and now to sort out all the spaghetti behind the machine, not to mention the accumulation of dust - I said don't mention the dust.

Cleaned off the fans in the PC, labelled all the 13amp plugs, referred to my hasty drawings of which bit went where and set it all up again plugged everything in and it's all working: surprise surprise.

But, the point of this grump, there's no instructions for the monitor, just a CD/DVD which says on the sleeve:- "Before operating the monitor please read this manual thoroughly."

So, stupid person, what am I supposed to read it on before operating it if I only have one computer? ::b

When you get past the 15 page chapter on EMC (electro magnetic compatibility) the 30 pages of warranty the 1125 pages of the same in 25 other languages, you'll come to a page that says - "plug it in and turn it on".

Sorry its late, but you should have gone to Tesco or similar and brought a cheap TV, they all have a pc monitor input socket, and cost very little. Example

That's what I did, I'll look at the instructions later - it might be a bit bright - I certainly hope that's all it is - otherwise I may have to adjust thousands of my photos if the old monitor wasn't giving me the correct picture.

The new monitor I wanted was £80, the one I ended up with was only £65. I know very little about electrical gizmos but there must be "telly stuff" in a telly which is not required in a simple monitor, which presumably explains the cheap telly @ £134.

That telly is also a bit too big to fit the space available between the printer and the tower, and my wife likes this one.

And if it doesn't work, then turn the computer off and back on again. . .

And you don't want a telly as a computer monitor unless you just use it as a telly, so you did the right thing IMO. A cheap 24" monitor runs a much higher resolution than a tv. It's meant for close viewing on a desktop. You know what even HD tv looks like close up on a biggish screen.

NO NO NO! Not facebook, not everyone uses (or wants to use) facebook, twatter, skype, instagram, myspace, linkedin and any of the other sheeple fads I haven't mentioned.

:error: And of course you still need a monitor to see it!

They assume that everyone has multiple ways of accessing the internet, because they don't want to be bothered with even the cheapest of printed manuals.

Most monitors will work with the standard set of windows drivers, enough to read the instructions.

You can then run the install disc to fine tune the monitor.

Which is of course right Dave, but you have to admit there is still a certain irony in not having some sort of paper instructions, if only to tell you exactly what you have just said.
