I've been doing some paving work for a nice old lady - she must be in her 70s, and noticed that she had had some new plastic verges put up on the roof.
I thought they looked a bit wonky, so got my ladder to check them over for her.....unbelievable.....they are totally the wrong size and each one leaves a perfect bird nesting hole. They are only fixed at the lower edge and were actually flapping about in the very slight breeze.
They turned up out of the blue, ("just passing and noticed they needed doing, we could do it straight away....blah blah blah....") were there for just an hour and a half, and charged her £280....... ::b

Shocking no matter the age of the client

Old folk or young mums and the like, or even the well to do.

It shouldn't be allowed to happen, but it does every day.

Most industries are so regulated these days with Health and safety or financial this and that
but Joe Builder turns up and often gets a few grand in cash up front for materials etc.
Sometimes its Job done and all are happy (client and Joe Builder)

But often its a horrible nightmare Joe Builder is not up to the job
and walks of the job having made a huge mess of everything
Often blaming the client as "Unreasonable"

Good trades are out there and to you all a big :salute:

to you bad trades I wish you a swift end to your nasty ways

(if your name is Joe and your a builder....Apologies....I just picked the name from the air...as an example)

James

She could contact trading standards over this. Anyone charging more than £30 to do work in your house is legally required by law to give you a 7 day cooling off period in writing. Its part of the doorstep selling regs brought in to give the authorites the power to deal with this type of thing.

Too True Lockie, but what are the odds they don't have road tax, vehicle insurance, liability insurance, an account or self assessment history - I doubt a little legislation is gona make them sweat.

True but trading standards have put quite a few people behind bars with this bit of legislation.

This....

Our trade really needs regulating properly...not easy but something needs to be done, even though there will always be people who prefer to pay 'some bloke' to do a sh*t job or people who get conned like this lady did.

I would...

Make it impossible to get the CIS without details of insurance, (upgadeable every year) and a level two trade qualification...be it an NVQ or a diploma...sites are slowly going this way with the cscs card...(although I think thats a pile of w*nk too)

Its not going to cure the disease of the crap jobber...but it might help
