Just got a renewal quote for our buildings and contents insurance, bear in mind we live in a Park Home, and the premium is up by 43.14%
The old policy had a buildings sum insured of upto £1m which certainly covered any site clearance and modifications and buying a new Park Home and having it sited back here after a total write-off by fire in the old home.

New policy has a sum insured for the above of £74,808 which would only just buy a replacement home but would definitely not cover site clearance or other costs incurred but the premium just for the 'buildings' section is up from £86.94 to £168.13 an increase of 93.8%.

Have phoned them up and they are not prepared to alter their quote so I have just cancelled the DD now that the last payment for the last year has been paid.

Now looking for some more quotes.
On the web, several companies want to know what I paid last year or what I have been quoted this year before sending me a quote. I am not prepared to disclose these details before being told what they want to charge me.
Do other members think I am right not to disclose other quotes before getting a price? I really want to use these quotes as a bargaining tool over the phone after I know their starting price.

No why should you tell them other quotes, we'd all like to know what the others guys want to fit the boiler.

Try Tesco.

Hi John.
Got a much better quote than the renewal, from a firm online and so I have gone with it.
There aren't many companies that do Park Homes and so it is a bit of a limited market.

The 'need to know' works both ways so with holding the information doesn't help either party. If you feel as if you might be 'cheated' on the quote then tell them something that's actually LOWER than what you paid last time.

Online comparison sites are actually good!

Fortunately my F-in-L is an ex-pharmacist and they enjoy all sorts of deals through their 'union' and these apply to their immediate relatives too so we now pay only £150-ish for annual cover.

Hi Dave,
I played it as "you tell me then I'll tel you" on the phone and it worked well, because without bluffing, the one I have accepted was lower than the renewal quote but when I told them what that was, they came down a further £25, so I did OK. And the excess is only £50 not the £150 that was stated on the renewal.

Just gone one better.

Yesterday afternoon I got a quote from another company for £100 LESS than the one I had accepted, ::b ::b

So I phoned to cancel the new policy under the Distance Selling Rules 'cooling off period' and when she asked why, I told her about the quote that was considerably lower than theirs. When I gave her the details of how much and the cover provided along with the name of the company, she spoke to her manager and they suddenly knocked another £60 off the premium that I had signed up for. :?
It was not worth bothering with cancelling so I accepted the figure.

:huray: :huray: :huray:

Just shows what they can do when squeezed.
