Hi,

I'll try to avoid rambling..

We are in a 4th floor flat and have a Mira Element thermostatic mixer shower. It runs off our combi boiler (so no extra hotwater tank).
I have noticed that when I use the shower (on mod. warm temps) 80% of the time there is a high pitched and sometimes piercingly loud whistling from what I presume to be the pipes in the wall. I don't think its the shower cartridge itself as that appears to be offset to the direction of noise, although it vibrates slightly to touch. My partner has his showers boiling hot and doesn't seem to hear the noise as much (less flow?)...

There has been no alteration to the overall flow to the flat via stopcock, and although the boiler has been serviced- (the fulcrum arm/ flow altered slightly to get optium hot water flow a few months ago), the noise in the pipe didn't start until weeks afterwards.
The bathroom was done up last summer, but the plumber only replaced the shower fitments (now have larger shower head) and bath, he wouldn't have had reason to touch the pipes at all really?

Is this noise likely to be something serious, could it result in a pipe rupturing and leaking?- as we really don't want to go down the road of digging into the wall after just doing up the bathroom!

Any suggestions on how to stop the noise if its something minor?
The bathtaps don't cause the same noise when run, but I suppose the pressure is lower as the boiler can't heat up a massive volume of water for bigger taps.

Help!

Thanks a lot.

It maybe the non-return fitting in the valve, no easy way to get at it that I know of, one of the guys may know more.

Is it the concealed or surface model.

I cant see any non return valves in the installation guide, but there could be some fitted elsewhere, under the bath maybe?

when where the filters last cleaned out?...you could give that a go and see if the noise stops.

instructions

Thanks for the ideas folks...

If you mean the filters within shower cartridge itself then they haven't been cleaned since it was installed, but it was only put in a few months back.

What is the non-return valve- I'm guessing its to do with preventing more than 1 direction of flow (-I'm no expert in case that wasn't obvious!), but is it related directly to the shower installation or the general shower/ bath water pipes?

I think our model is the concealed version- just the temp & on/ off control fixture on the wall.

I could have a bash at cleaning filters but I would hope it wouldn't be that so soon after fitting?
