Hi,

I'm planning on installing some MDF tongue and groove effect panelling onto the bottom half of the wall, below dado rail, in my hall, stairs & landing. I already have a dado rail and skirting and I'm planning on not removing these if possible. I have a couple of questions:

1. Does anybody know the best place to get sheets of T&G effect MDF panelling, preferably 6mm or thinner?

2. The bottom of the dado rail is only 2-3mm thick, meaning 6mm panelling will not join nicely to the dado. How could I overcome this without removing the dado?

I'm a bit of a DIY disaster so will be getting a carpenter mate to help me out with this...

Thanks all,
David

heeelllooo and welcome davver79 :welcome: :welcome: :welcome:

as far as i know it only comes in 9mm

the only way to get thinner is with a router and a "v" groove cutter
and would only recomend 6mm as 4mm mdf wont give a deep enough groove to look right

dependant on skirting you may get away with filler but you will definatly need to remove your dado as it will look like a complete bodge with filler

you can use picture rail upside down with a rebate for your wood as dado rail wont have a surface for a router cutter wheel to run on
you would off course be ok with a table

another point when going up the stairs you will have to cut your panels into shorter lengths to allow the angle
dont be tempted to cut an ange along the full length and place the offcut in the gap with a level join along the board as it will look carp

NOT..sure how you going to fit t+g at dado level unless you use a thin moulding to cover the join.. and how you gonna fix boards to wall...and keep them all straight and plumb???

no nails and this paragragh
"you can use picture rail upside down with a rebate for your wood as dado rail wont have a surface for a router cutter wheel to run on

although it should say rebate for your panel rather than wood

is there any space for intermediate support within the 28" wide section!!!

normaly i would go for 1x1" par or sawn battons 12mm mdf for the sides and 6mm mdf or 3mm mdf/hardboard dependant on span up to 6" 3mm up to 12" 6mm
