I use a stud detector from Stanley for studs in my plaster wall.

The missus says these tools are just typical - they promise to find you a stud but you end up with a plank.

Stud Detector, but it wont find the studs accurately as it will pick up the laths as well.

I've never heard good reports about stud finders and have never had a desire to own one, here's a couple of suggestions for finding studs without any fancy tools:-

Check on the skirtings and see if you can see the fixings, you can often make out where the nails/screws have been filled.

Measure from the end of the wall, the studs may well be at 16" centres, you may have to try from either end.

Tap the wall with something (fat end of a screwdriver or even just a pencil) and learn to detect the sound differences.

Just push hard and the wall may well deflect slightly between the studs.

Just make lots of holes with a bradawl an inch apart horizontally until you find something, can always make good later.

use a magnet, there will be 100s of nails in each stud
