Ok needed to change a tap.

I have a boiler (gas) in the garage a hot water tank in a bedroom, for which i simply turn a switch on when i want hot water (electric) and another tank in the roof.

To turn the water off to fit a new tap i went into the roof there are 3 pipes that go into the tank in the roof. One that goes in from the top has a stop cock type handle on it.

two other pipes come out of the bottom of the same tank just as they exit the tank there is a red circular value looks like a tiny steering wheel. there is one of these on each each of the pipes that come out of the bottom.

now if the tank is on the right should these two red valves be turned clockwise or anticlockwise. i have changed the tap (cold water in bathroom), i think i needed to close the stop cock going into the roof tank and not touch the two red wheels.

In trying to turn the water off i played with them and can't remember which way they should be now that i have finished replacing the tap......i know i know...idiot!

see photo the tank is thye black thing on the right of the photo.

Think kitchen tap, clockwise off, anti on.

Just be carefull with the little steering wheels they do and will break, if you use force.

are you sure please see photo

I wont comment on the above line, but a big Thank you anyway :thumbright:

Gate valve are notorious for breaking on the gate, and not holding off.

Turn it back on (Anti-clockwise) and tie the ballvalve up instead.

am i right in thinking the two pipes that come out of the bottom of the roof tank as in the pic take water from the tank to heat up. if they are in the wrong psoition should i still get water coming out of the hot water tap regardless of temperature.

thanks mate...sorry for ignorance but i have no idea with this stuff. i no longer wish to stop the water. have changed the taps. just want to make sure the roof tank is feeding water where it needs to go in the system. if clcokwise is wrong why do i still get water -cold- coming out of the hot water taps?

Turn both valve anti-clockwise as far they go then turn it back one full turn.

One will supply the cold to the bathrooms, and the other is the cold feed to the cylinder.

As above gate valve very rarely turn the water off 100%.

thanks for the info. i understand what you say that the water may not turn off 100%. but the water is not a trickle but full force. so while they were in the cloclwise psoition i was expecting nothing. i have followed your advise, can you explain why you say turn it back one full turn?

Yes you turn it back, so you have the option to work the wheel both ways to free it up.

You probably didn't have it turn fully off, which is why the water was still running, as above they are prone to breaking, meaning in your case you would need to bale the tank out and change it. best left alone in my opinion, if there is alternative ways.
