Hi there,

I am about to embark on renovating an Victorian house and for the duration will be living on site in a static caravan. I need to run a power cable from the house to the caravan but am not sure what size to use. It will need to be around 20-25m long and as it will be temporary I won't be able to bury it so it will either sit on the ground or I may run it in the air depending on what s best?

The caravan has a CU with a 63A RCD with 3 20A mcb's and a 5A mcb, and I need to know what size cable to run? I've tried using the calculators on TLC but there is no option for SWA run along the floor in temperatures as low as -10!!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Tom

There are two things to consider. Requirement and Supply.
Clearly if the largest fuse you can fit in existing board is 30A then likely that's all you can have.
I lived in a 16'4" touring van for 3 years with a 10A supply.
The other option is to use the suppliers fuse when means the cable must be able to take whole of available supply between 63A and 100A.
I will assume LABC will be involved so it will have to be right.
But first thing has to be to work out what you need. With gas heating, Cooking etc. Likely 16A enough but start using electric for heating as you can use more than a house.

Hi there, thanks for your reply :-)

Water heating and cooking will all be done by gas and the main space heating by a log burner but I will be using electric radiators during the nights to keep the place warm. Ideally I would like to have all of the power I need so would like to have the full 63A available if possible, even if I don't use it! I think the OH will get annoyed very quickly if it starts tripping and when she gets annoyed I get a ear full!!

I'm also planning on reusing the cable once the caravan has gone to feed my garage/workshop which will be in the same place as the caravan.

Thanks, Tom
