We have a gas central heating system in the house, yesterday there was a burst water main in the area, this has been repaired (cold water was off until this morning), but currently we do not have any hot water, during the day there was some hot water but it only lasted a few minutes, the boiler is working fine, there is a tank in our spare room which holds the water and that is also working, the water is not coming through the pipes, the only water that is currently working is the cold water.

Can anyone offer any assistance on this?

Sounds as though you may have drained the water storage tank in the roof, when mains supply off and now although tank now full,as cold supplies working,

You have an air lock in the hot supply pipework,if you have a kitchen mixer tap,you could try blowing mains through there maybe

We have two tanks in the attic, one is a long coffin tank I believe, and the other is a smaller tank. The kitchen has the hot and cold tap together.

The coffin tank feeds the hot and cold supplies and the smaller tank will probably be for your heating system for your info

To try to get rid of a air lock in hot pipework, place doubled up plastic bag over kitchen spout and open hot tap ,then open cold slowly, you may get a little wet from a bit of stray spray, you should hear the mains cold go up the hot, count slowly to 10 and then turn cold off and remove plastic bag, hopefully the hot will start running ok

Yeah I tried that a few mins ago, not using a plastic bag though I used the palm of my hand, opened the hot tap fully then slowly opened the cold tap, not much happened just the cold water ran from the hot tap, it didnt seem to remove the blockage.

The cold water is back running Ok,so presume ok and ball valve not blocked but ''coffin'' tank can point to conversion and builders pipework runs

I am considering that the cold water that is running ok may be off the mains and not from the tank - therefore the reason I asked narl to double check water actually exists in the tank. Or have I missed something. :error:

Easy - check to see how many pipes come out of it at the bottom. The top one will be the mains supply. If it's only one pipe then it is supplying the hot water cylinder. If it's two then other one may be supplying a toilet.
If your having problems with the air lock on the hot water and you have tried breaking the lock from the kitchen without success have a go at the bath mixer tap, else (at worse) you may have to get a hose into the coffin tank and flush it down the hot feed pipe.

Yeah the coffin tank runs the toilet as well, it may also run the hot water also. Dont have a bath here, just an electric shower and two sinks, kitchen and bathroom.

Is the toilet filling up ok? You may have to be patient and keep trying with the kitchen tap, backflushing. You may find leaving the hot tap open it will suddenly spurt and start running ok. Ensure any other hot taps are turned off as you try this.

Not even a slow dribble? Try backflushing for up to 20secs.

Yeah no dribble , nothing at all, I am wondering could it be a little more serious than just an airlock?
