I have a 2001 Ford Focus saloon just had its MOT a month ago,now then this clunking noise from the NS rear of the car,it only happens occationaly, usualy over pot holed roads but it has happened setting off on a right hand bend on smooth tarmac,it sounds like a worn shock but i would have thought any faulty suspension would have been picked up on the MOT,
i have had the wheel off and had a route but nothings obvious
so any idea's folks

quite common on the Focus (I drive a 2001 Zetec) apparently it's because of the suspension being at the time "Revolutionary", although it isn't independent suspension, it acts like it is...though you do get the occasional clunking, paticularly on poor road surfaces.

Not a fault as such, but part of the Design...

Check the spring is not broken as this is getting far more common these days. Also check the bushes on the shock absorber and also the other bushes for movement.

my modeo tdci 53 reg does this. apparently there is a rear trailing arm (iirc lol) and the bush splits and this causes the knocking noise. but currently this part doesnt get tested during an mot according to my mechanic mate. and since my mondeo just got through its mot aswell he is probably correct.

edit: mine is also n/s rear where i hear the clunks

Trailing arm...that was what I was thinking of...basically it clunks a bit....but still does it's job..(Well that's what I was told)
