We live in a Victorian terrace and the problem appears on an internal solid wall that runs from the front to the back of the house between the hall and the middle sitting room. A while ago we noticed that an area of plaster had blown and when we removed the plaster there was a white fibrous growth between the top coat of plaster and the main render behind. Since then the patch has got bigger and recently a larger lump of plaster became blown and the white substance is again obvious behind. I am going to try and attached a photo and it will show you what I mean far better than my description! What I find weird is that the problem appears in the middle of the wall. There is no major problem on the other side of the wall other than some bubbling and powdery paint work. All the timber in the close proximity appears sound, the skirting boards are fine and there doesn't appear to be anything (like pipes) that would be running in this section of the wall. My thoughts are that there may be something within the wall that is rotting? Apparently when they built these houses they would put anything they could find in the walls to pad them out! Does that sound feasible to anyone? I think the only option is to hack off the plaster on both sides and see what is going on but if people think it is dry rot then I'll get someone to come and take a look at it first before we do anything.
Thanks is advance.

Hi,

That isn't "dry rot" it is basically a high concentration of salt being pulled through the wall, this is caused by possibly a small damp problem and it's easiest route out is through the plasterwork
