Hello all. Been lurking on this board for yonks but haven't posted (cluck, cluck!). Just started my up on my own a couple of months ago.....bloody scary innit? All the jobs you did no probs whilst working with/for someone else suddenly make you think twice and as for pricing....don't even go there!

Have to say the board is, well, just brill! Been a voyeur on lots of others but this is the best, hands down. It's better than the tele Help

Seriously, the forum is always the first place I turn to for advice, info and a plain old laugh.

Ok, if you're interested, and no dramas if you're not, a little bit about me and then you can all tell me my fortune Shocked

48 yrs old starting up on my own, bit late in life but hey ho, going through a messy divorce at same time so, lots of spare time Rolling Eyes had to move back in with mum n dad ( Bang Head That's strange I'm sure I can hear Eric Idle singing

Working as Property Maintenance i.e. jack of all trades etc. Started life as a Ship's Engineer Officer, did 10 years at sea, which was nice. Made redundant so flogged insurance for a few years, which wasn't nice. Been a community worker, probation officer, market research interviewer, car salesman, publican and concert violinist. Ok, the last one is a little bit made up but I've done virtually everything else so why not?

So how does all that qualify me to start messing about with people's houses? Well, always been practical (engineering etc) had friends/family in the building trade who I used to work for on leave and have done on and off for the past 30 years. Picked up stuff from that, bought, renovated and sold a few houses, helped friends etc do the same and watched lots of Tommy Walsh (nuff said!)

Know my limitations but not scared to try something after asking advice from experienced pro's. I know I'm learning so I price accordingly and don't bullshit the customer's. I figure if I can make enough to live on whilst improving my skills then that'll do for me Tommy. The big money (yeah right!) will come later. I figure building up a good reputation is better than ripping the a**e out of it now.

Anyway, if you've read this far, cheers and I look forward to meeting some of you soon, see you on the forums! Laughing

Welcome OddJobCo

(a) The best time to start up on your own is in the middle of a reccession, I did many yaers ago and never looked back from day one.

(b) you can never be too 'old' to start up on your own, indeed the older you are the more you are likely to suceed for pretty obvious reasons.

welcome
