many years ago i would watch my dad heat metal (on a gas hob) then shape and cool in differenmt ways, to achive hardness or springy etc. I have with my own kids occasionally wanted to do similar but couldn't remember the coulors and cooling treatments, can anyone tell me or put me onto website chart etc.

Hardening and tempering, years since I did this but you need to have the right type of carbon steel for each job, these might help...
