Hi Guys

Was hoping for a little help

A few days aga I noticed my overflow pipe at the side of the house had water dripping from it. I had never seen this happen before so I traced the pipe to my converted loft.

I have 3 things a blue cylinder shaped thing which I have no idea what it does, a white water heater and a black plastic water tank (my boiler is two floors down in the garage).

I found that the black water tank was the one that was overflowing, it seemed strange to me as it had a ballcock in it however it was not the ballcock that was allowing more water to enter the the tank and over flow but rather what appeared to be the hot water pipe. The reason I say this is I felt the pipe at the lowest of the tank and noticed it was warm.

I then went outside and felt the water being expelled from the overflow and this too was warm. I forced water out of the tank and noted the level I expected the ballcock to float lower and the cold water tap to be switched on but infact it wasnt low enough for this to happen, however I did notice the water level slowly rising.

Anyway a few days later my wife goes to have a bath and she asks me if I have used all the hot water (which I ofcourse have not) and I check and sure enough there has all of a sudden become no hot water.

Now the central heating is still working albeit it has given me a few problems recently (such as one radiator that needed constant bleeding and then was so noisey filling up and removing water and another two radiators needing balancing) other than that it seems to be in reasonable shape. I had it serviced a year ago and Im due a service now but I cant work out for the life of me what is happening any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I would suspect the coil in the copper tank has holed (The one that holds your stored hot water).

Edit ooops manners... :welcomeuhm:

:welcomeuhm: I'd go for that - holed coil in cylinder (your big blue one). Your saying about a black water tank but not another one. Please clarify.

I think we need some pics of all the bits.

Blue cylinder thing could be the wrong expansion vessel.

White thing would be the boiler.

Black tank could feed a cylinder on a lower floor.

Back flow gets my vote at the moment.

Has any work been done prior recently.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the welcome and the answers so far.

Attached are some pics hopefully they will help??\

Blue cylinder has been there for a while (and isn't that big it is actually the smallest item of the 3) I'm not sure if it was replaced during last service, but even if it was it has been there for a year.

The white thing is my water heater - I think?

Also there isn't another cylinder on another floor

Sorry the pics are upside down, not sure why they are correctly saved on my laptop.

You say you have another cylinder on another floor. Is this like the blue one?

Sorry my fault you wrote 'There isn't another cylinder on another floor.

Looking at the pics. On 1.jpg on the pipe going into the cylinder on the righthand side it has a manual airvent on the top of it. If this has air in it then it will stop the circulation to heat up the cylinder.

If you gently untwist it, release the air until water dribbles out then it may solve your problem. If nothing comes out then the hole maybe blocked - best call an engineer out.

Ok I'm going to try that now - thanks very much for the suggestion.

Today I turned off the water from the mains and left the hot water running expecting the white tank to empty (albeit with cold water) but to my suprise it didn't? So I'm thinking it is empty?

The only thing that did empty was the black tank and very very slowly at that!

Can we have a pic with all the bits shown in the same image, a landscape for example.

Or all the hot water could be passing through the TPRV.

Pics aren't great but assuming the heating works ok we can be reasonably sure it's a UV cylinder rather than a thermal store.

As it looks like the builders put it in I would recommend a safety check by a properly qualified plumber who can sus it out at the same time.

Of course the tank could be feeding the toilets or something and would empty slowly if the mains was off.

I expect the water side is unvented but the boiler is open vent but we can't even see what sort of size the black tank is!

Better pictures and the writing on any labels and we will be much nearer the solution

moggridge can you take a look at this picture is this what you would like me to turn? It appears to be round so I'm not sure what I would use to turn it, pliars?
