The cold water from my upstairs taps comes from the header tank, toilet water comes from mains direct. Downstairs cold taps comes from mains. As I would like to use the upstairs water as a drinking supply can anyone help me to swap supplies to my upstairs cold taps, how do I identify which is which supply up in the loft?. I've done a bit of DiY plumbing with a new shower and rad in the BR and moving supplies in the kitchen Confused

heeelllooo tryagain and welcome

assuming the cold mains travels up through the bathroom the feed to the cistern is more likely to "t" off on the way up

can you not follow the pipework and if you find a "t "going up and down it may be the cold mains passing through on the way up or indeed on the way down

Thanks for that Al
I have had a look in the loft and see what looks like the mains coming in because it goes straight into the central heating and water system header tanks via ball cock systems, it doesn't seem to 'T' off anywhere. On the way out of the botton of the cold water header tank are 2 pipes. One I think goes to the hot water tank as header pressure, the other I suspect goes into the bottom of the hot water tank to fill up from the bottom. Do you think that sounds sensible?
If I were to connect mains water to either of these pipes I recon I would pressurise the hot water tank with mains pressure and I am not sure if that is a good idea. What I really want to do is feed the cold tap system with fresh water. Any suggestions please??

YOU MUST NOT PRESSURISE THE HOT WATER CYLINDER

This is why not...

Mr Hinton
Thanks for the reply and the graphic illustration, it would make a bit of a mess of Mrs TryAgain's sheets and towels in the airing cupboard

Any tips on how to trace the pipes I need to connect mains to my upstairs cold water system gratefully received. Thanks.

the easiest way is to do this from the loft.

locate the main cold water storage tank.

The cold main is the one connected to the ball valve

There should be 2 outlet pipes at the bottom of the tank.

One is the cold to the taps, and the other feeds the cylinder.

The cold feed to the base of the cylinder is probably the easier one to find, this is the one to leave alone!

The other one is the cold feed to the taps. this will need cutting, cap the feed from the tank, than connect the end from the taps to the cold main.
