I've just finished fixing plasterboard to my bathroom ceiling. I bought 2 sheets from a different supplier and did the odd pieces from a British Gypsum sheet I already had. I noticed the the new sheets are thicker, forming a step at the joins. I looked at the tiny print on the boards to see what brand it is, but to my horror read instead, "Plaster the other side only". I have always appllied skim or tiles to the grey side, now I'm told not to do that. Am I going to have to change the boards and use the white side?

aye you need to re- do it.. sounds like you have used 12mm and 9mm boards,, and yer your boards are the wrong way round

| You probably have a step now because one edge of the ivory side is the tapered edge, which is chamfered against the square edge of the gey side. Simply apply your skrim tape over the joints and lay on a coat of finish the width of the trowell over the scrim to feather out the step, leave for half an hour before plastering the lot or leave till the next day and uni bon the plastered scrim joints. If you have used 9.5 and 12 mm together then lay on a tight coat of bonding on the 9.5mm boards to level them, leave to set then skim the lot. It will make not a jot of difference if the board is ivory or grey side up, not good practice to have grey side facing (for future reference) thats why the tapered edge is on the ivory side, but if a little mistake has been made on a small ceiling then its absolutely nothing to worry about....and I challenge anyone to contradict me with a valid reason!!!!!! |

The step is caused by the new boards being 15mm I ordered 12mm to match the older sheet. I had never heard of 15mm being available. I contacted the supplier, he said "Yes, you can get them". I replied that he had supplied me with them. No wonder I had problems tucking it above the walls.
He also said that the ivory side is better paper, and flat with no voids under the paper. Yes, boards are used on the ivory side for all finishes, but the skim wouldn't fall off if I used the grey side. (I've fixed all the other boards in the house that way, and nobody has ever said that it was wrong.) He could have said, "Sorry you'll have to change it", and sold me some more plasterboard. I'll get onto British Gypsum to find out their verdict.

Which would mean the plaster applied to that "grey" side would what Mr Rubber hammer ???
A : Explode

Thats the problem here isnt it !!people who dont know their arse from their elbow giving out advise on things they know nowt about and if followed would cost a man alot of time effort and money. Of course grey side is the wrong way but if the guy did not go to the expense of changing it all like the other advise given, the world wasnt about to stop turning. In fact what would happen is .......errr exactly the same result as had he plastered ivory side down excepting a LITTLE extra work |

I emailed British Gypsum, they merely attached a pdf about skimming plasterboard, confirming that the white side should be used (issued 1999 after I had last used the material) and that it was at my own risk if I skimmed the grey side, but no explanation of why they had started the new instruction to use the white side. I'll think about it for a few days.

Hi Mooncat,
You will be able to skim the step out and as for plastering the wrong side it won't make any difference, you used to have to plaster the brown side and the ivory side was for decoration now it's changed although you should follow the manufacturer's advice, in this instance you will be ok

just skim it, it will be ok, Mooncat since they changed the boards and before that there are probably thousands of cut pieces
of plaster board that are plastered back to front as people mark out the face of the board for the cuts but forget to draw it the opposite way 
so it just get fixed wrong side out and get skimmed in with the rest of the wall or ceiling,
over the last 30 + years I've probably skimmed a thousand pieces and the only difference is when the plaster dries it lighter in colour
when white side was wrong and darker now that grey side is wrong, its never fell off and it paints over just the same as the rest.
only a few were my mistakes |

I was talking to my pal, a retired builder, about it, and he asked me how long I planned to live! I said I thought I might be good for 20 or 30 years, and he said that it was likely to last at least that long, and anyway if I was going to move house, somebody else would probably not like my decor, and rip the plasterboard off the studs and joists. I'll send in some pix when I've done more of the work.
