only time PC world are ok for anything is by shopping online and choosing collect instore and even then only good in a dire emergency.....its like shopping in the soviet union...bit like tesco really, tetchy staff with zero product knowledge, stupid pricing, and obsolete junk labelled as "brand new"

I only buy stuff from PC World in a DIRE emergency

....positives....theyre not tesco...(who IMHO are THE most evil retailer in britain....heck they stooped to bullying old ladies who asked for a price correction (like the advertisement invited customers to do if they spotted a wrong price in store)...bullying meaning using 2 managers and 6 General Assts to harass her....disgusting and they treat their staff worse.

try working as a contractor on the filling stations
i needed to fill out our work permit, their work permit & then our job sheets
& you had to log on & off with their maintenance people as well
so many times i should have put on the risk assessment form
HAZARD, general public removing/driving over barriers
RISK, high
CONTROL, big feck of stick to tw@t the numpties ::b

another thing with Tesco's was they refused to pay over the slightest thing like "a different pen was used to sign off on the work, you must have altered it"
good thing i was only the monkey not the organ grinder, sh*t like that can put you out of business

yep it is another topic

(but FYI I used to work for them...twice so I know the BS they get up to regularly)

I used to work on dotcom and they persistently sent out vans which were dangerous (for example :no mirrors so no left hand side vision...yeah I refused to have anything to do with that and was put through a disciplinary for refusing to drive the van in that state)

VI - probably they were being professional and adhering to legal standards (re: pen). As stated slagging of Tesco is another topic :boxing: (says me who isn't the biggest fan of any supermarket!)

Ok, did it really blow up i.e bang, flames and smoke or did it give some other symptom of failure (the exact truth this time  )

Well, it didnt actually bang, but what happened was I was typing a post on UHM, the screen on my monitor went blank, the little on and off light on the monitor was flickering, the hardrive light was flickering, there was a loud whirling/humming noise, and I smelled burning, I turned it off, then on again again, monitor still shut cown, lights still flickering, burning smell getting worse, whirling/humming noise was getting so loud I thought it was going to take off, then a PFFFFT, and everything went dead. :?

But we have a new drive now, a likkle baby one, not the bigger clumpy old one I had before, but we have another problem.

Internet working okay, getting into site okay, but the phone line is messed up, people have rang us on our mobiles to tell us they cant get through.
We pick the phone up, and we can dial out, incoming calls ring, but when we pick up phone it goes dead.
Spoken to the callers, and they said its completely dead thier end.

However, we have a slight breakthrough...., If I come out of internet, then the people can get through, we are able to answer the call, but as soon as I am back on internet, again phone rings, but when phone is picked up, its completely dead.

We know its something to do with either new drive, or the telephone cable , but hubby has spent hours trying to get it sorted, hopefully when he comes in from work he will be able to sort it.

We phoned our BT line, and they did a check, and the line is not out of order or anything, and we know its happened since we got the new drive.

Need to get it sorted, as going away on hols thurs morning.

I still have the old drive till I find someone who can either save my stuff, or know how to get rid of the drive, as dont want my details left on it when we dump it or whatever.

There is a couple more questions I need to get sorted, but that can wait till we get back.

Thankyou all for your advice. :-)

I think you're creating a bit of confusion by calling your tower unit a hard drive. I also get people calling it a CPU.

As mentioned above, get a caddy like this and put the old hard drive from the dead PC into it.

Connect it to a USB port on the new PC and it will show up in Computer as another drive.

Go to that drive and Open the folders > Dosuments and Settings > Your username > My Documents.

Select evrything by holding down Ctrl and pressing A. Copy it by holding down Ctrl and pressing C.

Click the Documents folder on the Start menu, then paste it all by holding down the Ctrl key and pressing V.

The phobe thing sounds a bit odd.

Are you on dial-up or broadband?

Do you use a USB modem or an ethernet cable?

Hi Richie, Sorry about the confusion, but I did mean the tower unit that holds the drive, I am PC literate as you can tell lol, this is why I find it difficult to explain anything when I am talking about puters. :cb

Good news though, the telephone and internet all work now, and will sort out the drive thingy information when we come back off holiday.

Thanks for help. :-)

If you have a new BT homehub you can connect a phone to it but I've found it causes problems. The new black hub.

Best to plug in at the filter end, just an idea.
