What is the best weedkiller available that will clear the ground of anything that is growing there and will prevent anything from taking root for a number of years.Used to use sodium chlorate which did a great job but now that has been taken off the market.

You can still buy sodium chlorate just it is now 50% fire depressant so you can't make bombs with it anymore.
Most people say roundup is the best but it ain't cheap (1/4 the price if you get a farmer to buy you a gallon rather than buying it from a DIY store / garden centre in 1L or less) and it quickly breaks down in the ground so it won't stop things growing, just kill whats there now.

Hmm,
You might be right.
Am sure lots of garden centres will still have some in stock.
I heard it was being 'withdrawn' but heard the same thing about creasote 20 years ago and you can still get that in lots of places.

Sale of Sodium Chlorate was banned in the UK (EU) in 2009, you can get it on Ebay, comes from Turkey.

Sodium Chloride works pretty well too.
