very intriguing.

These houses built into the hillsides (Earth Shelters?) are meant to be virtually cost -free to run in energy usage. Be great to have something like that set in a location with magic views :thumbright:

Beats living in little boxes on housing estates any day.

yes it does, but first for the hippy utopia to work, you'll need to do a hitler and kill off a large % of population, then build on nice greenbelt land

Great :thumbright:

I'm not a hippy but I bet they'd be fun for a weekend away especially with kids.

I wonder if they ever leak and whether there's a building reg section that has to vet their construction.

Bludall,

I remember seeing this on a Grand Designs program ....

Underground House

As far as hippy-chicky stuff goes, this kind of building can go up (down? in? ) where a 'normal' building cannot, so there is an immediate advantage there. Plus this comment from the link posted above ...
"Earth shelters cost 40% less than a more standard building, and with miniscule running costs they make an ideal solution for the budget-conscious"

So actually, maybe this could actually be 'affordable housing' for the 21st Century?

An alternative for modern living,but....If you can't find a hillside or local woodland to supply fuel...why not convert a council house.

Council houses are Cheap and easy to find!
First, remove the front door and replace with a fence panel, immediately lets others know your house has character.

Then place a large skip on the kerbside infront of your new home, the generous locals will be happy to keep you supplied with items for your knew home. If you find something in the skip you don't want to reclaim, just place it on your front lawn and slowly dismantle for fuel as needed.

If you've been clever enough to choose your council house near the estate allotments then a ready supply of fresh food is just over that fence...of course fresh food isn't that tasty so you'll be able to shift those greens down the local market for few quid, which could earn you several happy meals!

Other sources of raw materials would be the local highrise flats, they always have a pallet or two needing to be burnt outside the communal dustbins. Talking of dustbins, they are a good place to find pets, rats can be great companions and lots of fun if you catch them.

Refering to the original link, I think he is incredibly selfish and short sighted if he thinks living in a hobit hole and planting trees is going to improve our society or enviroment. He is one less hippy bothering the real world.

They tried to sell the underground house at Cheltenham but no one was daft enough to buy it. Now the owners are trying to raffle it off.

Underground Hovel
