I just started my 4 mile dog walk routine and on the walk a medium sized sludge coloured snake with a yellow mark around the neck, slithered past us. I thought grass snakes were green. We do only have grass snakes and adders don't we?

Now that would be likely, out without its owner! Definitely not a slow worm either.

As far as I can tell it looked like this but more brown in colour.
It was a grass snake! I was about 1' away from it but I let it slither off, even though I'm not keen on the beasties!

We came across a similar one last year in Wareham forest, with our dogs, which made us jump!
There are two main British snakes as you say, although there is the rarer smooth Snake.
The one with the yellow band around its neck is the grass snake whilst the Adder has a zig zag black pattern down its back.
We were told by a vet at Wareham that they treat quite a few pets in that area that are bitten by Adders, and the bites can cause problems in some animals.
We always watch where we are walking now, especially in wooded areas - just in case!

I was walking under an M1 motorway bridge (dodgy cracks in the walls!) and it had been basking on the tarmac, we disturbed it. I just kept the dog on a short lead and watched it slither off. Amazing creatures but would die if I had to touch one, same with big spiders!

 That,s funny .
We get all kinds of snakes in my area but most are harmless .
I usually stumble on to them when i am cutting the grass .
