I am going to try and fix our toilet myself unless you guys talk me out of it. For full disclosure i am a mum who is a somewhat handy and a bit broke so if this is not too complicated i want to give it a go. I have attached a picture of the current sad state of affairs. I bought a replacement cistern lever arm but it did not fit in to the current handle so assume i have to get a complete new handle. this looks pretty straightforward to fix i guess. The real issue is the other broken part. Firstly i dont know what it is called... I am talking to the bit in the picture where there is a blue piece and then you can see the bit of tape and a hair band ( yes seriously) that is holding it in place. I am hoping that the bit that is broken can be bought as a separate part and i just unscrew the blue valve an replace... is this wishful thinking? obviously any advice at all greatly appreciated.

Assuming you have sorted the problem with the handle then you need a new inlet valve.

this http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Telesco ... lve/p54478

Should fit the bill, anything over £10 will get you free next day delivery.

Fitting isn't too difficult with the correct tools...there's probably a video on the site somewhere that shows you how..

Thanks wine-o... so I dont need to be worried that it doesnt look the same as the part that was already in there? beacuse i think there was a round thing at the end of the broken valve ( with the hairband)

What you have is a "Bottom entry valve" the one I linked to is adjustable for height (The fixed ones come in different sizes) so should be ideal for a first timer fixing this problem.

If you would like to get more info from the forumers on here, then post some pics of the pipe work as it goes to the underside of the cistern.. may be able to give you some more hints and tips/advice..

I'd get the same type of inlet valve and just swop them by undoing the blue nut. Save messing about with the bottom of the loo

Looks to me like what you have is one of these:-

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Plumbing/Toilet%20Fittings/Torbeck%20Adjustable%20Height%20Valve/d20/sd2835/p32033

If so - and if you can turn off the water supply to your toilet - then you could just get a new one, unscrew the blue bit shown in your picture (there'll be a black rubber diaphragm and some other bits inside), and you could just use the new bits from the new unit and leave the upright part of the valve in place.

Hi inky pete- yes that is it! so I can get a whole new one and just simply use the part that attaches to the blue valve- That would be great! Thank you

Make sure the water supply to the toilet cistern is off before you undo the blue nut, or you'll get very, very wet!!

If you're lucky there'll be an isolator valve on the cistern supply pipe, if not then you'll need to turn off your mains stopcock. Either way, once it's turned off flush the toilet and make sure the cistern doesn't refill.
