How do you 'measure' a gear wheel?

I have a brass gear wheel with 72 teeth and want to purchase a 14 tooth gear to match. I need to know the 'MOD' value and other measurements to get one that meshes properly but how do you 'measure' the parameters of a gear to get the data required to order a suitable match?

Measurements I have so far are:

72 teeth
material - brass
44.35mm overall diameter
1.5mm (as near as I can measure) tooth depth
4.88mm thick
5.56mm boss* - probably irrelevant

I can't measure tooth angle etc so as far as I'm concerned the measurements given above are all that can be determined from the gear I have.

As a last resort I could purchase a matching pair to replace the existing gear but that increases the cost considerably.

This might be useful to play around with http://woodgears.ca/gear_cutting/template.html. You can design the gear you want and print it. You might be able to e-mail it to a gear supplier to see if they have stock to match. Just an idea.

Although it won't work for my brass gears, the site link for the template has gone in my favourites! I've also saved the main site as there's some good stuff in there - thanks :thumbright:
