|
|
|
Have been doing a fair bit of soldering and lots more to come over the next 3 weeks or so and my MAPP Gas and torch are getting old and are a bit big and HOT.
What torch would you recommend? _________________ Jaeger.

Some good deals on Rothenberger Superfire 2 torches on ebay £40 ish delivered if you keep your eyes peeled....but maybe thats what you have already?
You can get an adaptor so that you can use the Rothenberger torches with the Primus 2000 bottles. |

I have this little fella...
using with Mapp at present, I'm getting more comfortable with it now and I think I'll stick with it. Also hitting a number of 28mm fittings currently and the Mapp is proving the preferred cooking method!
Interestingly looked into tank tube and torch make-ups and they look like a good option, may explore that some more later. _________________ Jaeger.

Yeah that's virtually identical except you have a flame adjuster on the superfire 2.
You can get an adaptor so that you can turn the superfire 2 torch into a tube set up....so it will fit your torch also....
However I can’t find it anywhere on the internet even on the Rothenberger site but that doesn’t mean that one isn’t available.
The Rothenberger part number for the adaptor is 3.5653 |

Quick Question.
Jaegar - you made mention of 28mm fittings and sort of hinted that your previous torch was not up to job. I am I reading between the lines wrong?
I have a typical basic DIY-style gas torch (from wickes about 1o+ years ago) using standard cylinders - old style with adjustable nozzle and match to light.
Do you think I will have problems with making decent solder joints on 28mm copper?
Been ok on 15mm but 28mm probably whole new ball game!
Got my final (planned) bit of pipework to complete in next couple of months - which is all 28mm. _________________ I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"

Hi Hoovie,
Other way round, the MAPP is dealing with the 28mm couplings just fine.
I've not used a smaller torch for some time, but would think it could be hard work on a larger fitting, may even take a bit to get a 22mm fitting.
Ideally the solder shouldn't go near the fitting till the flux boils, I see flux boiling within 5 to 10 sec although it's difficult to say, have a number of 22 to do tomorrow under the floor I'll try and time them better. It'll give me something to do. If I get finished on them then I'll be building 2 gas supply lines through and around a bay window in 28mm so will try and get a timing there too.
Maybe Hint and BS have some timings? _________________ Jaeger.

I will try a few test ones before I do the real thing - going for end feed as well Don't think they do 28mm in yorkshires _________________ I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"

well they wouldnt yorkshires are for bodgers and 28mm is pro stuff really. I have soldered 28mm with a bog standard diy torch in the past, agreed a MAPP torch will be quicker but you will be able to do it with what you have _________________ Decking |
