Sorry no pic's with this!

In my job as a firefighter we got called to a gas leak yesterday, turned up at the address, all windows were open and distraught owner with family outside.

Turns out he had been doing some DIY in his house involving cutting chases in a wall, he said he had checked for electric cables but not for pipes as there were no rads/taps nearby, however haflway through his cutting there was a loud hiss and a strong smell of gas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He had cut straight through his gas supply, luckily with no ignition.

However what we did find was that this pipe was actually chased into the wall, is this right??????

I bet you could tell a thousand and one stories like that Laughing

Perfectly legal provided the pipe is protected from corrosion.

Interesting you mention the ignition, had it caught fire it would have resembled an very large blowlamp, it would only go bang when the correct air/gas ratio was present and then ignition.

Damn halogen things you mean Bang Head

I don't think many people realise how well some loft insulation burns, or come to that most some pipe insulation

Thick black acrid smoke comes to mind.

welcome CM999,
Dad was a 'Smoke Eater' and a Gas Fitter, served 28 years.

Quite legal fitting, can't imagine what he used to check for cables with as the gas mains would have made any cable/joist locator 'light up'.

The ignition would have taken his eye brows off and maybe some hair but no 'Big Bang' as scruff says only with build up and correct mix.

Incidentally you can also create a substantial explosion with the correct mixture of sugar in the air Shocked

But it's highly unlikely Smile

Any powder in the air can give you quite a bang if its ignited

Plastic in a wall Sad

That's just asking for someone to cut through it with a wall chaser.

Should have had a marker with it Shocked

Just saw this topic and have a similiar sort of query, my gas pipe is run on the surface of my porch wall, i am proposing to insulate the porch wall and plasterboard it , should i put a metal plate in the wall to protect the gas pipe or how should i proceed with protecting it, i dont really want a floor to ceiling access panel in my porch .

Nick

Hi Nick,
Just run a marker, 1mm or 2.5mm single will do, follow the pipe and it'll react to a stud cable detector and warn of a hidden service Thumbright

A foil strip will do the same but I'm sure you'll have a piece of cable handy?
