I am enquiring about the Domestic gas meter, as i have in my house a 5 Black dial and 3 red dial meter which is classed as Cu Mtr meter.

However my Dad house they have 4 Black dial meter and 2 Red dial and is this classed as a Cu Ft per Meter.

If so how does this calculate the gas usuage from the meter, as from my understanding both meter looks same to me, but when working it out in Cu Mtr and Cu ft baffles me ,as how much gas is used from these 2 gas meters

The one reveloution on the cu ft and one revolution on the Cu mt how much gas is it used, as from my point of view looking at the gas meter it looks the same to me thinking the black dial giving the same reading

I know they show you on the bill how they work out the bill and they have an extra calculation for the Cu Ft gas meter.
The Cu Mtr gas meter this is already worked out in KWH.

I spoke to British gas and they told me the Cu Ft gas meter goes slow and the Cu Mtr meter goes fast and the amount of gas you will be using the same on the both meter for the same appliance. I do not how this works


Please can you correct my confusion.

One measures cubic meters of gas used. The other measures cubic feet of gas used. 1 cubic metre = 35.3146667 cubic feet.

From my last gas bill where our meter is in cubic feet:
The meter readings indicated that 42 cubic feet had been used.

Cubic feet of gas used = 42
Convert to cubic meters X 283
Multiply by conversion factor X 1.02264
Multiply by calorific value X 39.6
Convert to Kwh ÷ 3.6

The calorific value (39.6 this time) is the one that can change from one bill to the next because of the quality of the gas energy. So the meter cannot calculate the Kwh as one part of the calculation varies regularly.

also varies with the seasons gas expands in the summer so the callorific value is less than in the winter but we are only talking a few percent
so use daves calculations and it will be give or take 5% if his calculations where from a summer bill then plus 3 and minus 7 and a winter bill plus 7 and minus 3

As Big-All says, there is very little difference in the calorific value figure.

I think if you multiply by 3.6 you will err on the heavy side and your bill may be a little less.

The reason for this enquiry was i recieved a bill statment for £834.08 from 9 April 09 to 9 October 09 and never recieved this sort of bill from my Previous supplier British Gas.

I am with Southern Electric and the reason they told me they thought i had a 4 dial meter and they were working it on the Cu /Ft. I told Southern Electric i never had this sort high bill with British Gas. This is Why this enquiry had enlighten me.

This is the reason i wanted to know how does the meter works out how much gas it has passed through the pipe on the Cubic meter (Gas meter) and Cubic Feet (Gas Meter) for me the dial looks the same.

Sothern electric works out the gas bill for Cu mtr,

741 x 1.02264 = 757. 77624
757.77624 x 39.3 = 29780.606
29780.606 ÷ 3.6 = 8,272.3905kwh

Sothern electric works out the gas bill for Cu ft,

741 x 1.02264 = 757.77624
757.77624 x 0.0283 = 21.445067
21.445067 x 39.3 = 842.79113
842.79113 ÷ 3.6 = 23,410.864kwh


1st tier 1143kh 4.310p each
2nd tier is 3.240p each.

I have now gas bill reduced from 834.08 to £90 due to Gas meter confusion, as they thought i was on the 4 dial gas meter Cu Ft. My Gas meter has the 5 Dial meter which already works out in Cu MTR. This has happned during the switch over from another supplier and for the past year i have been paying gas at a higher rate.

For all readers make sure they have the correct meter reference, as other wise you may end up like me recieving high bills.
