Hello
I am converting half of my garage into an office, it is a single skin structure with a flat roof. Can anyone give me some guidance on a few things.
I am after know the thickness and type of inuslation that I will need on the walls and floor. Also what sort of construction will I need with regards to insulation and boarding everything, ie DPM, ventilation gaps etc.
Finally the stud wall that will be across the garage will be fixed into an outside wall on one side and an inside wall on the other. Do I need to put a DPM on the walls before attaching the vertical timbers and do I need to use an specific type of fixing to do this with it being a potentially damp outside wall?
Many Thanks |

hints, my 'reason' was that my budgie had escaped its cage and the kids were distraught
thats why in the building trade they are known as 'excuses' |

I hepled my friend the exact same job.
we used a plastic DPC, which went up the walls by a foot, across the floor, then a screed over the top.
We assembled 2" x2" wooden frames and mounted off the walls leaving a cavity of an inch.
we used 2" insulated sheets on between the wall stud work, then covered with silver backed plasterboard.
The roof we used 4" thick insulated board, between the exsisting joints, again using silver backed plasterboard.
The whole room was then skimmed.
So far been very warm & toasty in there! _________________ www.hintonheating.com

first off build your floor. but a sheet of plastic visquine down coming up the edges like hints say by about a foot. then get some joists cut going from side to side. use something like 5x2. i then chop aload of different sizes blocks and put them under the joists. once you get one right gripfil the blocks in place. once all your joists are in and level then put some 150mm loft insulation in between the joists. now screw 8x2 t&g chipboard flooring to it. theres your floor.
now this is easier to fit the walls. just knock up some stud walls and fix the to the floor and to the ceiling joists. no fixings to the external wall. leave a gap of about 1" between the bricks and joists. then fit some loft insulation in between the joists. then plasterboard the walls using 1/2" vapour check boards. that is the stuff with foil on the back.
as for the ceiling, with it bein a flat roof you have to be careful. the cheapest way is to screw some 1" batterns across the joists and insulate between the joists keeping the insulation up to the roof boards. then plasterboard using the 1/2 vapourboard again. a tip, get someone to help or find a supplier that supplies 6x3 vapour board as it is easier to fit on your own. the batterns going across allow air to go from joist gap to joist gap so you wont get any dead spots. then fit a couple of facia vents at the front and a couple at the back. your ceiling will now have good airflow.
there are lots of ways to do a garage conversion but this from my expierience is the quickest and cheapest way,. |

ive used that sometimes. it is dearer than loft insulation but is good stuff. depends on how muchh you want to spend.
loft insulation is easy in the walls as you just build the studs at 400 centres and it sits in nicely. by putting cross batterns on the ceiling that keeps it up in the roof space. less itchy though |

| Thanks everyone that's great. Just one question though Panlid. You said about the roof and using vapour control plasterboard. I have already had a new roof put of the garage and when this was done I asked they to put a warm deck in at the time and this was done with 100mm King span insultation which was a vapour control built it. With this is it OK just to plasterboard internally with just standard plasterboard. This will have a 100mm air gap between the joists. Would all this be OK? |
