Have noticed recent mould and fungal growth in our bedroom which is causing mrs DFA some concern & tbh, me too.

This is the bedroom wall -

Mold????

Fungal images:

Fungal growth in the bedroom growing from carpet. We believe its as a result of a recently discovered leak; the floor beneath the carpet is like a pool. Want to remove the carpet as it probably is full of spores but reluctant to do anything until the insurance have had a look.

Can anyone advise how serious this is and whether its a health risk?

What should we be doing???????

Always better to upload the photos rather than remote hosting MOD 2

Hi DFs,

As the leak is now fixed? And dry? Treat affected areas with an anti-fungicidal spray. Long term exposure to spores is a health hazard to adults, do not let baby's use the room until the spores have been removed/killed.

The fungus is a Peziza species, probably P. cerea which grows on mortar, and is sometimes known as the Cellar Cup, although there are other species. It is harmless, and the spores are harmless to people with a normal immume system. Anyone with a suppressed immune system should avoid them. Best keep babies away, but no need to worry unduly. Incidentally, if you tap a cup, you may see a burst of smoke rise up from the cup. Those are spores, the tapping having caused a mass release. They are shot out from tiny little cannon like organs, each holding 8 'rounds'.
