I think I heard that the British Govt. will 'give' building land to 'developers'. Watch out for prairies of identikit boxes, churned out like sausages, and thrown up, to the lowest standards of design and insulation, yet still making plenty of profit. What is needed are houses designed by the people who will actually live in them, self-building in other words.

Its got to be all built on debt though hasn't it? 95% mortgages seems as if we have been here before.

Government assistance to first time buyers.....? How many first time buyers actually go for a NEW house? In my experience the FTB starts off with a small flat/terraced home or similar.

We were lucky compared to youngsters today, both had a job, our own transport, and a semi-detached house (leasehold) on a modern estate. That was in 1975, I was 29.

Good point, it also means that people who currently have existing "starter homes" will hit negative equity as their property values drop out from under them due to a total lack of anyone to buy it off them.

More to the point, which political fcukwit made the decision to start underwriting loans to people who might not be able to afford them and could well end up with the taxpayer bailing them out in the event they default?
Sound familiar? Lehman banking crisis anyone?
DON'T THEY EVER LEARN?

Why give the land to the robbing developers to stick up crap thet'll fall down in 20 years, if you really must, give it to people to build their own houses on! Community projects = free labour.
Wartime prefabs were of better quality than the shite they're throwing up these days.

Wartime prefabs were of better quality than the shite they're throwing up these days. Which is exactly the point I was making!

And damn right man!
Self building is near impossible for so many people these days, the amount of capital you have to come up with as a deposit for a selfbuild mortgage, is just insane. Trying to get a mortgage on a normal house is hard enough.
I'm sick and tired of driving past all this newbuild shite, it's just so cheap and tacky. I'd rather have a 1 bed terraced that was done properly than a 3 bed on a new estate.

When my Mom and Dad wanted to buy a 3-bedroom 1930s semi in 1956, they had to put up a deposit of £400 on a £2,000 house. Fortunately they could just afford it, so a 20% deposit is not unusual, I was able to put a £1000 on a £6,500 house in 1975 from my life savings. Then the public were offered 125% mortgages, and the trouble started.

125% morgages are just bonkers, completely defeats the entire idea of a mortgage and becomes part unsecured loan, with the rates to match.
Such a high risk related, if someone can't save up a deposit you have to question whether they have the financial sensibilitys to pay a mortgage. I have to guess not.

So this isn't going to stimulate the building trade, then?

If they want to get housing sorted, start a massive coucil house building scheme and scrap the right to buy, Council tenancy should also be means tested at the upper end, really hacks me off seeing folk with a couple of fancy cars outside and two long holidays a year - if you can afford that, you can afford to buy or get a private rent.
