Yay! Well done, Bright_spark! :huray:

Listen... I turn the electricity off at the mains before I even look at the fuse box  so no chance of me touching anything without doing that first!

I've looked in on the plastering forum... they seem, erm, a bit harsh on n00bs over there!

Well maybe you can answer my questions, Scruff? Two of the walls have been taken back to bare brick cos the plaster had blown and was just falling off as the paper was stripped. But I can't decide whether to go for plastering or plasterboarding using dot and dab. Also if I'm going to paper the walls when I'm finished will I need to do a finishing skim?

I remember this from my lecy training in the late 60s

Lead sheathed cables developed serious problems as they got older The rubber insulation would brake down around the two wires and crumble away if touched and in some case could turn to dust within the sheathing. These cables would still work ok providing they remained completly undisturbed as the slightest movement could cause a short

There is a possibility that prior to the re wire someone had managed to partialy replaced this cable with a length of pvc and this has accidentaly been incorporated into the rewire and at the same time the old lead cable section in the wall was just cut off (believing it was dead) leaving it undisturbed till now.

But in any case this "live" cable needs tracing back and isolating from its source.

Thanks Rovert - it does now appear to be dead and not causing any further trips in the main fuse box. I am getting an electrician over on Tuesday to sort it out properly.

Just read all of this today!
Seems like there needs to be some kind of easy system for wire labelling. Perhaps D-Line will diversify into it!
Looking forward to hearing what the electrician has to say.
