Scruff, I did say earlier I was an eejit!

Afternoon, Bright_spark! :-)

Right, I put the setting at 2V as suggested in the instruction book, put the red probe on the end of the red wire and the black probe on the matching wire. The readout was -.002.

Then I put the black probe on the outer lead casing, red probe still on red wire, and the readout was -.015 but quickly dropped to .000.

I guess this is okay?

Did both tests you suggested and on 200 the reading is 000, with the red probe on the outer casing and black probe on the black wire the reading is -.001 or -.002.

one last test that needs to be performed is the touch the neutral core to the metal sheath and see if it trips the RCD again. If it does then despite there being no voltage on it it is still somehow connected to your house wiring and needs to be traced out and disconnected.

Mr Norweb-engineer has just left! He looked at the gubbins in the meter cupboard and tested the earth circuit - the reading was 0.11, which he said was fine. He said that the sub-main from next door needs to be replaced but that it isn't urgent - someone will phone to make arrangements to come and do that in the next week or so.

He said we need to get a spark in to find out where the cable in the living room goes to and get it capped off properly.

Good point sparkydude! :thumbright:
When this final test is done... i suspect the rcd will not trip... i believe it would be safe to say there is no danger of electric shock from this cable... but it does need to be traced & capped off accordingly!... would you agree?
