The spark called round this morning - tested the cable and it was definitely dead. He took it back and capped it off properly. He did it for free and took about 10 minutes (bless him!). Which left the rest of the day for my rather amusing attempt at dotting and dabbing...

Well he is the brother of my son's mate who has been staying with us for the last 3 weeks, so that's why I get cheap rates!

If you want a real laugh, Scruff, head over to my post on the plastering forum - lovely pictures of my attempt at dot and dab!

Seen it already. :thumbright:

Did you bang them nice and flat with a straight edge, and stagger the joints.

Looks ok from the pics.

I did bang them nice and flat with a straight edge. :-) Had to get small boards (900 x 1200) as the bigger ones wouldn't fit in the boot of my car.

Well, just read the whole thread, glad you got the problem solved in the end :thumbright:

Reminded me of the house my parents bought in the early 60's (built 1904) had lead covered wiring for the lights and VIR? for the 2!! 15A sockets (1 up & 1 down), when the upstairs lights flickered and went off my father would nip into the loft and move the cables until the lights came back on

When I qualified as a sparky, me and a work colleague re-wired the lights (in PVC), my father had already done the sockets (pre part P days)

It did rather (not sure what that says about my life!) but I wanted to see if the mystery had been solved!
Glad it has all worked out safely, and cheaply!
