I think it is possible to weld forged steel using a mig welder, but think you must pre-heat the forged steel prior to welding and let it cool at a slow pace after welding.

Assuming it is forged, then yes, without to much bother.

A g clamp though, are you certain its forged, not cast?
I was asked to weld a g clamp back together years ago, didnt stick all that well.

Could you not weld a plate to the tube, then drill the clamp and bolt to the bracket?

Hi Hitch
Thanks for that suggestion - I think I was a bit blinkered as to welding it to the pipe that would work for what I want it for
I was just thinking "In the box"
Thanks
Johnny

The advantage of welding a plate to the tube, then bolt the clamp to that, is you could change the clamp should the idea need altering in time, or even so the clamp could be rotated to allow different orientation, or even a different purpose.

One thing i thought, is how well will a gclamp grip onto the frame of the bicycle....?
