My monitor occasionally keeps shutting itself on and off when I'm online. It had a fit the other day and was flashing on and off and the screen was changing colour to red then green and I think blue at one point. Does it sound like a faulty monitor or something more sinister like a hard drive on the way out? Does anyone know? Never had it do that before, the connections are plugged in and all is well today.

Trust you! Why go in hiding? My oh has the pink bikini top one as a screen saver! Thank goodness we don't get relatives round.
No ideas about the flashing monitor then?

sounds like a cable fault is possible - check all ends are securely in.

has the PC or Screen been moved and the cable put back in? check for any bent or broken pins

Hoovie,

Thanks,

Nothing seems slack today so maybe the oh was the culprit when he attached a new slide scanner.

is the power cable for the slide scanner laying against or twisted around the monitor cable (one that goes from computer to the monitor?
could be electrical interference or if CRT (big old style monitor) could be the electron guns giving up

The scanner gadget is in a box, so there are no cables lying around. It is an old chunky monitor so maybe it has a problem with the electron guns, I'm no expert. We're looking at wall mountable monitor now anyway, so probably just as well. I was just worried that the hard drive was up the swanny.

Never heard of those, we tend to look on Ebuyer or Maplin or just do a search for the cheapest. Model wise are any makes to be avoided?

I went off ebuyer (used to be a fan) when they kept missing delivery dates and were rude when challenged about it, I try not to use Scan as they "forgot" to dispatch a £900 order, though I just seem unlucky sometimes, they have a good range so sometimes I have to order from them, Tekheads, I stumbled across on a recommendation from a friend, and always have dispatched things to me on time and working first time...which makes a nice change.

For wall mounts, look for VESA compliant, means that the monitor is compatible with any VESA standard mounting bracket...meaning no special brackets needed.

I tend to just check reviews on line, got my brother a nice 24" monitor about a year ago for £250ish, come down a bit since then, his only gripe was the speakers on the monitor were a bit puny, but he always uses headphones and thus isnt a problem.

Try and get a monitor that supports either HDMI or DVI as well as VGA, picture quality tends to be a lot brighter compared to the normal VGA connection, most computers now have DVI output.

Oh and a lot of companies now dont bother including display cables (VGA or DVI) some do, most dont, only cost a couple of pounds to add to the order but annoying if you forget to order one and left with a monitor you cant use till you get a display cable. PC World have to be THE biggest rip off merchants...e.g. £15 for a £2 USB cord, £25 for a display cable that I've seen for about £5 or less online.

a few examples in diff sizes and prices (biggest working down to smallest)

26" Ilyama

24" Dell (they make good monitors, just not so great computer towers)

22" hyundai

22" AG Neovo (nice monitors, colour reproduction on mine is really good when using DVI)

Dell does nothing for me, no idea why! I was looking at less than £150.

both of the 22" monitors are within your price range, Though the AG Neovo is the better buy in terms of cheaper monitors.
but as before have a look at some reviews and see what takes your fancy :-)

I like reviews, they give you a better guide than a spec list.
