My basement tap has been dripping for a couple of days now. I was reading that I can replace the washer and fix it all from the top of the tap without touching any pipes. Problem is I can't figure how to take off the "retaining screw" in order to take off the knob, I think. If anyone knows how to disassemble this kind of tap it would help alot.

it sounds like cannot find the retaining screw too me?

you will find the screw under the little plastic caps on the taptops.

the plastic caps can be prized out with a small screwdriver.

are you sure the caps come off because there isn't even like a spot where i could wedge it out with a flat head screwdriver, like that's what I thought but I just don't know how to get the cap off

if thier isnt a screw on the side of the tap handle or the taphead is pushfitted on only without any retaining screws, the plastic caps must be able to be prized off.

sometimes you will slightly damage the cap removing it.

Take the indice out and there's a screw under it.

You are aware you have to turn the water off.

k, so I managed to take it apart, the cap was outrageously jammed on tight.

The washers don't look overly worn but they haven't been changed in like 10 years, could they be worn if they don't appear to be?

Because I wouldn't know why else it's dripping if its not the washer, btw it is dripping from the facet where the water comes out and not where the handles are if that helps. Is there a facet washer on the tap, because I'm attempting to change the knobs washers

The seating in the tap may have a grove in it, if you shine a torch into the body.

The spout has an O ring washer, to get that out you turn the spout through 180 degs and pull unwards as you go.

So I disassembled it, then i reassembled it by putting on a new washer on the bottom of the tap stem. I put the 2 tap stems back into the 2 switch holes, since there is a cold and hot tap, tightened the hexagonal nut untill it is extremely tight, i placed the tap turners back onto the stem and then screwed it all back together.

Now I think i missed a step because I'm in a predicament. When i tighten the tap stem on tightly i obviously cant turn the knobs because it is wrenched on.

When it's loose the tap stem comes off when I turn the knobs.

When I have the tap stem tight shouldn't the water not be able to come out the spout or faucet? Because then it's basically like both knobs are off.

I can't turn my water back on because when I do my tap continually runs, and I really need to get my water back on, so any help would be great

Thanks

If you click on the post reply button at the bottom of the last post, you will see a browse button.

If you also take a couple of pics of the parts and save them on your computer, no bigger than 600h x 620w you can attach them to your reply.

you need to say something in the big box as an explanation.

That way we don't get pop-up and spam ::b and I don't have to delete or edit anything.

well the pictures are irrelevant now because I've disassembled it, i reassmbled it but now the water can't be shut off, it must be a faulty tap stem because I think thats what turns the water off ultimately

The washer turns it off.

If you disassemble it and post a pic we can hopefully see where you're going wrong.
