Redoing a room that has lots of hairline cracks in the plaster ceiling. I have read that you can buy a special type of wallpaper that you can paint. I was thinking of fixing the hairline cracks and papering over them. What do you think of that idea?

It depends how bad the cracks are and what is causing them to be honest!

I have seen ceilings where people have used plasterboard and not staggered the joints and they have cracked like mad. I have also seen badly cracked bedroom ceilings that have been caused by people putting too much weight in the loft.

You can paint over most wall paper, but if the cracks are really bad then they may reappear over time.

If the cracks have been there for years than you could try covering them up as you suggested.

Polycell make some products for cracked ceilings, but I have never tried them and so I can't recommend them, but here is the link-

the paper you want is called lining paper

1000 grade is fine, a quad roll in B&Q is £6

I have seen the so called lining paper in hardware stores and it says on the back that it is used to cover brick or paneling. Just make sure you prime it real good before you hang it so it doesn't come down in time.

Would it be better to reskim the ceiling! You can then scrim all the cracks so they dont come back

Cracking is usually to do with what is under neath the plaster moving. Better to Replaster board, and then skim, rather than just skim over the existing cracks.

Yeh good point moon! Smile
But i just presumed it has done all its cracking and now settled down and when you scrim it and skim those crack will not re-appear.
But if new cracks are still appearing then re-board
Ive come across cracks in ceilings every week and always scrim the cracks with no come backs.

Yes I would hate to re-skim the walls, cause I think they would come back. I do plan reboarding the ceiling in the future, just trying to get the house ready for a refinance situation, but I'm looking for a solution that will last longer than a month.

Trust me mate, the cracks will not come through the scrim tape! If they do or you keep getting cracks elsewhere then you got a problem with movement or something!

I would look into why your getting lots of cracks before spend money on reboarding and/or skimming
