I am fitting a kitchen for my electrician, also doing the floor tiling.
I was expecting nice simple ceramic tiles, but no, he's just phoned me to tell me his mrs has come home with a load of travertine. I don't even know what it looks like, let alone how to fit the stuff. So please help!!
1) what do i fix it with? apparently it has to be white adhesive - why? does it need to have any other properties?
2) subfloor is concrete - will it need priming, and what with? (i've got some PVA left in the vanWink)
2) what do i cut it with?
3) he was told it has to be sealed before and after it is grouted, he has the sealant - any tips on using this stuff?
4) is normal grout ok? what colours look good with it?
5) i use 10mm half round trowel for floor tiles - is this ok?
6) any other tips?
7) anyone want to come and do it for me tomorrow????LOL |

owen here is travertine.

1. i used rapid set white adhesive.
2. i didnt prime as i screeded the floor to get level. if using bal then use there own primer etc.
2 (again). you cant dry cut it as it is too soft. use a wet cutter. as its a kitchen floor it is also easy to go outside and cut it with a grinder. contrary to what someone said, i have a good wet cutter but i found it quicker with a grinder. though i was putting new skirts on so it didnt need to be too neat on the edges.
3. insgtructed by muddy i didnt seal prior to fitting as he said it takes the adhesive longer to set. i just sealed it before grouting. just put it on with a sponge or similar.
4.i used ivory bal superflex
5.i use a think its 10mm. rounded large floor trowel
6. tips, back fill the tiles first. that is, to scrape adhesive over the back face to fill in any hollows so you dont get weak spots.
i buttered both the floor and the tile.
dont mix up too much stuff as you will end up throwing it away. just mix up enough for 3 or 4 tiles to get the drift.
find the high spot of the floor and work to that point to get it proper flat. also use a straight edge to keep them flat.
