A programmer and a timer are Different.
Best to post all the details about the boiler and controls plus what you intend to replace them with.
Makes and models please.

Perhaps I discribed it incorrectly as a timer, I am replacing a danfloss unit, the type with a dial that you turn to set the time and lugs that turns the heating on and off. I fitted a drayton programmer on my daughters has c/h and it has been fine, so I've already bought one for my heating. I have a boiler, h/w tank, 2 motorised valves, danfloss 4 wires pump. I know I will have to fit a junction box.

But does the boiler, motorized valves and pump have a make/model.
Can you also explain a 4 wire pump, far as I know they don't make one for the domestic market.
Every boiler, programmer, timer etc is different, therefore the information requested is a must have.

Do you have a room thermostat and a thermostat on the side of your HW cylinder?
Which model no is the diverter valve - V4073 or V4044?

I have added the corresponding Drayton terminals to the Danfoss.
6 - L 5 - N 1 - 3 2 - 4
you don't need any link wires.
Set the programmer to fully pumped.

On the Drayton programmer there are 6 terminals L and N. I cannot find a diagram that shows where the 4 corresponding wires go from the programmer to the numbered terminals in the junction box
