I want to fit a new light in the ceiling in my garage. I'm going to move the existing one from the middle of the ceiling across so its about 1/3 or 1/4 way in & the new one I'm going to just come off the current light cable & fit the new light over at the other 1/3 or 1/4 of my garage.
The additional cable for the extra light will come straight off the fixing of the existing strip light, go through the plasterboard hole that the original cable uses & comes out of a new hole a metre or so across the ceiling. I will fit the new light here, so the cable is not visible in anyway.

Current wiring is on a RCD, on the down stairs light ring.

The garage is part of the house, not an extension. House is 15 yeards old.

So, can I do this without the need of an electricians certificate? I've checked Part P & it seems to say I'm ok to do this. (i think)

^ Cheeky!

Thats good news.

Ok, haven’t decided to do this, but I might complicate things & add in an independent light switch for the new light. I know there’s a lot more work with cables & chasing in but will this kind of work need a certificate?

Remember if this is an internal garge to the house then the ceiling will most likeley be fireproofed, so any holes and penetrations you make in it need to be restored to the same fire rating as the existing structure. A tube of intumescent mastic to seal round the cables will do the trick.
